Kitten Combo Testing
Kitten Combo Testing Policy
At Furballs of Atlanta, we prioritize the health of every cat in our care. Because kittens under 6 months old may retain maternal antibodies (passed from their mother), early FIV/FeLV test results can be inconclusive.
Here’s what you need to know:
🔬 Our Testing Protocol
All cats 6 months and up are tested upon intake for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus)
Kittens under 6 months with known or suspected exposure to FIV/FeLV (e.g., from an infected mother) may receive an initial combo test + confirmatory retest at or after 6 months if still in our care. We strongly encourage adopters adopting kittens under 6 months to retest at their veterinarian at the appropriate age.
⚠ Important for Adopters
A negative test result in a kitten under 6 months does not guarantee FIV/FELV-negative status (due to maternal antibody interference). These antibodies are passed from the mother to the kitten and can persist for several months, leading to a false-positive or false-negative result.
FeLV-positive kittens should be retested after 6 months old, as some may clear the virus.
🐾 Our Promise
We disclose all known health information and are happy to discuss specific testing timelines, risks, and care for your adopted feline. If retesting is needed, we can provide guidance on affordable options.
By adopting a kitten under 6 months, you acknowledge this testing policy and agree to follow up at your veterinarian as needed.
